What Is the Amity Program?

Are you aware that our PTA has been sponsoring native Spanish-speaking interns to come and assist our teachers and kids each year? Puesta Del Sol has been working with an organization called The Amity Institute for over 10 years. The Amity Institute is based out of San Diego, CA and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building international friendships and cultural understanding through teaching exchange. Each year our interns become a very important part of our school community. For 14-20 weeks, families from our school community open their home to host one of the interns. The interns are between the ages of 20-30 and have a passion for working with children. While being hosted, the interns have a great opportunity to learn about the US, its culture, and the diversity of people that make up our society.  At the same time, your family has an opportunity to learn about the intern's country and culture, and your kids have a great opportunity to practice their Spanish. If you would like to learn more about the Amity Institute and its mission, please check out their website at www.amity.org.

Who Are the Amity Interns This Year?

Thanks to the PTA, our school community will have the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from our six Amity Interns this school year.

ananietod@gmail.com

Hello! My name is Ana Nieto and I am 22 years old. I am from a cozy city in Spain named Valladolid, where I live with my parents. Although I have an older brother, I don’t live with him because he is staying in Madrid.

I like to listen to music, read books, go to the cinema, travel, experience and learn new things, swim and be outdoors.

This year I have finished my degree in Primary Education, specializing in Special Needs Education. After this experience I would like to study for my Kindergarten Education degree.

I knew that I wanted to be an Amity because I enjoy spending my time with kids, playing or teaching, because we can learn new things with them, so I think this year will be something unforgettable!

Alba Profile Image Alba Vilar de Dios - Vallirana, Spain
albavd@blanquerna.url.edu

Hi! My name is Alba and I was born in Barcelona.  I grew up in Vallirana, a village about 20 km away from Barcelona, where I live with my little brother and my parents. I’m a person very close to my family, including my aunts, uncles and cousins. We always find an excuse to see each other and to make plans and family meals. All of my family is very active and I love all the quality time that I spend with these people, because they are the reason I had the opportunity to be a teacher, to be the person that I am today and to be here this year!

Last year I finished my degree in Elementary Education and I have specialized in music education. I like to know other cultures and other forms of teaching and learning. I would like to use the techniques I learn and extrapolate them to other languages in different countries, like teaching Spanish in an English speaking country. I want to further my knowledge of the culture, the educational system and life in the US schools and society. I'm also interested in the way they teach in the US to complete my knowledge and adapt those methodologies in my teaching practice and in my life.

I'm a person with two different cultures, but with constant contact between them because I'm from Catalonia, a small “country” inside Spain. This country gave me a Catalan Language and a very special vision in which I see the world and the education. I think that the fact that I speak two languages since I was born has motivated me to learn more languages, and I would love to share this desire to learn with  other people.

I love to do outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, climbing and enjoying  the small things in life. I want to try a new activities like surfing, wake boarding, paddle boarding and other activities here in Seattle and in the US. I’m open minded to do another activities and know the US traditions.

I’m so happy to be here this year and to have this opportunity. I will give my all for you in this experience that I’m starting now!

I'm María Loarte and I'm from Madrid, Spain. I am 21 years old and I have just finished my degree in Primary Education Teaching. I live with my parents in Madrid and I have one older brother who lives in the Netherlands.

I love animals, music, watching series and meeting new people. I also like traveling, new experiences and learning about new cultures and education systems. These are some of the main reasons why I decided to come here. I've also been in other places for my teaching degree practice periods, such as Sweden, Finland and England.

I decided to come here because I think it is a great opportunity to acquire experience in the teaching field and also improve my English level. I am still not sure what I will do in the future but being a Spanish teacher in a foreign country is something I would like to do.
