What Is the Amity Program?

Are you aware that our PTA has been sponsoring native Spanish-speaking interns to come and assist our teachers and kids each year? Puesta Del Sol has been working with an organization called The Amity Institute for over 10 years. The Amity Institute is based out of San Diego, CA and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building international friendships and cultural understanding through teaching exchange. Each year our interns become a very important part of our school community. For 14-20 weeks, families from our school community open their home to host one of the interns. The interns are between the ages of 20-30 and have a passion for working with children. While being hosted, the interns have a great opportunity to learn about the US, its culture, and the diversity of people that make up our society.  At the same time, your family has an opportunity to learn about the intern's country and culture, and your kids have a great opportunity to practice their Spanish. If you would like to learn more about the Amity Institute and its mission, please check out their website at www.amity.org.

To host an Amity Intern in the 2019-2020 school year, please fill out an application and send it to the Amity Committee at amity@puestadelsolpta.org, or you may drop off the application at the school office.

Who Are the Amity Interns This Year?

Thanks to the PTA, our school community will have the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from our six Amity Interns this school year.

2018-2019 Amity Interns:

Ana Frias Perez - Madrid, Spain

Hi! my name is Ana Isabel Frias and I am from Calahorra (La Rioja), a medium-sized town located in the north of Spain. I studied clarinet and music education at the Conservatory of Music in Pamplona (Navarra), and then I moved to Madrid to get my Master's Degree and Certifications in Clarinet Performance and Early Childhood Music Education. I have been working as a music teacher in many music schools.  I am very happy with my work because I love teaching, sharing, and making music with other people and to introduce children to it. The intern experience at Puesta del Sol can give me new skills and approaches that I can implement in my music lessons.  In my free time, I love going out to concerts and cultural activities, and I really like hiking, biking, reading and spending time with my family and friends. My next goal after the internship experience is to specialize in MLT for newborn and children, a music theory by E. Gordon, and get an internship or a job in this area.

Bryan "Gabriel" Rodriguez Rodríguez - Soyapango, El Salvador

I am Gabriel Rodríguez and I am from El Salvador.  I am 23 years old.  I am a student with a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the Universidad Tecnológica de El Salvador.  During my academic and professional experience I have taught basic mathematics to children in the second grade.  When I was a student in the ninth grade, I taught about God and the Bible to children in an evangelical church.  I was part of a soccer school when I was child, and then I became a coach assistant there where I taught physical activities, exercises, and how to play football soccer to children in my community. I have been a teacher assistant to an English instructor.  I also was enrolled in different social projects during three years at my university.  I like to play soccer, go to the cinema, watch series, spend time with my family, hang out with friends and help people as much as I can.  When I return to my country, I would like to finish my Bachelor’s Degree in English, do a specialization in translation and interpretation, and then start a Masters in Educational Administration.  With all that I will learn at Puesta del Sol, I would like to do something that can help my people, especially children and make a difference for improving the Salvadoran education.

Although teaching is what I want to do when I return Spain, I have studied Industrial Design. That is why I love drawing and oil painting.  I have volunteered organizing games and activities for children in my city and in my village, which is in Zamora, also close to Madrid.  My last great experience was in Frankfurt as an au pair.  I was working with a family who had two year old twins.  As a teacher in schools, I have done my internships in high schools as a technology and arts teacher- a totally wonderful experience!

I would like to teach my language in other countries, give classes or tutorial sessions in English and French, and start my postgraduate studies in translation. My expectations are to grow in my personal and professional life with this experience, improve my English considering all my language skills, gain experience, and acquire more knowledge about teaching.

Pablo Anitua Diez - Vitoria, Spain

Hi! My name is Pablo Anitua.  I was brought up in a small city in the northern part of Spain called Vitoria, with my parents and my two younger siblings. Four years ago I left home to pursue my university studies, in Oviedo, where I spent the best years of my life. Therefore, I have my heart divided between the two cities. This year I finished my studies in elementary school teacher degree specializing in physical education, and I’m very proud of that.

I have enjoyed several working experiences with children, focusing on my future work. I worked as a free time leader in a place where children celebrate their birthdays and other similar events. I have also offered private lessons to elementary school children, and I have participated in several summer camps. My hobbies are spending time with my family and friends, listening to music, skiing and participating in sports.  Also, I love travelling and living new experiences.  After this amazing year, I would like to continue studying in order to improve in my career.
