2017-2018 Reflections Program - Theme: Within Reach

Get a sneak peak at new rules and resources for next year:

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and WSPTA cultural arts competition. Students start by entering their local school competition with the chance to advance to the District, State and National competitions. Reflections participation is one of Puesta del Sol’s Academic Challenge activities. To participate:

  • Create An Original Work – 2017 Theme: Within Reach
  • Prepare the Entry – Review the rules to avoid being disqualified
  • Submit the Entry – Art, Online registration, & entry form due October 2017 (Exact date TBA)
  • Understand Judging Criteria – Tips for crafting your artist statement
  • Attend Gallery Night /Awards – November 2017 (Exact date TBA)

Create an Original Work

The 2017-18 theme is TBA. Enter in one or more of the following arts categories.

  • Dance Choreography
  • Film Production
  • Literature
  • Music Composition
  • Photography
  • Visual Arts
  • Special Artist

Puesta del Sol’s 2017 deadline is October 2017 TBA. Be sure to review “Prepare the Entry” (below) prior to starting your work so you are familiar with the rules and guidelines.

Prepare the Entry

Entries must be the work of one student, be new, original and inspired by the theme. They should not be something created in a class or with the assistance of an adult.

Use the following NEW Reflections Checklists to plan and submit your entry. These do not need to be turned in. They simply summarize National and State PTA rules to make it easier for students, parents and volunteers.

Visual Arts & Photography Checklist
Digital Entries: Film, Dance, and Music Checklist
Literature Checklist

New in 2017, the checklist rules need to be followed in order for the entry to be eligible for both the Reflections competition and Academic Challenge credit. Entries not following the rules will be disqualified. This ensures that the spirit of both programs remains intact.

The submission period will be increased to two weeks from TBA to TBA. To guarantee your entry qualifies, we will review entries turned in by TBA for eligibility and students can make corrections before the final deadline of TBA. There are no reviews after TBA and violations will result in disqualification.

We want to set our students up for success, so please plan to turn in your entries by TBA and take advantage of the review.

Submit the Entry

1.  Complete the Official Entry Form (TBA 9/17) and place it in a page protector

  • Attach to the back of Visual and Photo entries
  • Attach to a manila envelope containing a USB/DVD with the Music, Film or Dance file or a copy of your Literature entry

2.  Complete the Puesta del Sol Online Registration (TBA 9/17) to ensure Academic Challenge credit and to generate judging sheets.

3.  Send email to [email protected]

  • Artist Statements not entered on the Online Registration
  • Literature, Film, Dance and Music files (see Literature and Digital Entry Checklists for file types)

4.  Label your entry on the back. No names on the front, cover sheets, title or credit screens. Reflections uses blind judging.

5.  Turn in the project and form to the office between TBA and TBA for review. Final due date TBA.

Understand Judging Criteria

Volunteer arts and education experts review submissions without knowledge of the entrants’ identity. These judges are from the community and are not associated with Puesta del Sol. Judges are instructed to look for personal interpretations on the program theme that best exemplify creativity and technical skill.

  • Interpretation: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement.
  • Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation.
  • Technique: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area.

Remember that the Artist Statement is an important part of your entry. In your artist statement, tell us about your work and what it means to you.

  • How does your work relate to the theme?
  • What is your personal connection to the theme?
  • What did you use to create your work (e.g. supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
  • What/Who was your inspiration?

Gallery Night and Awards

Twenty five entries will be chosen as finalists and move on to the Bellevue PTSA Council competition. These winners will be announced at our Reflections Gallery Night in November 2017 TBA. On this evening, all of the entries (usually over 125 pieces of art!) will be on display and student will be awarded participation and finalist ribbons. Join us for refreshments as we celebrate the artistic achievement of our Puesta del Sol students!
