Snow White in the Black Forest
is this year’s Drama Club production!  Studio East is coming to our school for almost 7 weeks to work with fifty 4th and 5th grade students after school to produce this Musical. Studio East has introduced thousands of children to the magical world of live theater. Our goal is that each student has a great theater experience learning about music, drama and dance in their own production.  Much more information will be provided at the Mandatory Parent Meeting in early April, but here are some of the important details:

Registration for the Drama Club is for 4th and 5th grade students only and costs $75 per student. Registration will be entirely online this year and will fill quickly!  The registration link will live on this page after 6:30am on Monday, March 28th. As there are only parts for 50 actors, registrations will be accepted on a first come/first serve basis and a waiting list will be assembled in the event there are over 50. Our goal is to create a positive experience for all!  While this is a considerable commitment, your child will be able to provide a list of conflicts prior to casting allowing the directors to note availability for rehearsals when casting. Conflicts provided prior to casting will be considered excused absences from non-mandatory rehearsals.

Auditions take place April 14th and 15th, with final casting happening on April 18th.  At the parent meeting, be prepared to sign your child up for a 45-minute time slot on either Thursday or Friday (April 14th and 15th). Students do not audition for specific parts.  They are assigned parts by our Studio East Directors based on ability and schedule conflicts.  At the audition, students will be asked to perform a short memorized monologue and sing and dance in a group.  If a student wishes a lead role they will also sing solo (usually Happy Birthday).  The directors will cast the parts without regard to grade level. Week of April 18th - the final casting (April 18th) and all cast read-through (April 19th) are mandatory for all students from 3:30-6:00pm.

Rehearsals will take place after school (sign in and out is at the gym) Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 3:30-6:00pm from April 18th - May 26th.  There is no rehearsal Thursday and Friday 4/21 & 22. Beginning April 25th, students are called depending on their parts.  Expect the whole cast to be called the last two weeks before the performance.  You will be able to provide a conflict list for your child so that on regular (non-mandatory) rehearsal days, conflicts that you specify for your child will be excused absences.  During Tech Week, the last week before the show, there are four rehearsals that are mandatory for everybody:  May 23rd, 24th, 25th, & 26th. Tech Week times and locations are as follows:

5/23 - Monday, 5:00-8:00 Newport High School Auditorium,
5/24 - Tuesday 3:30-6:30 Puesta del Sol gym,
5/25 - Wednesday 1:10-4:10 Puesta del Sol gym,
5/26 - Thursday 4:30-7:30 Newport High School Cafeteria/Auditorium

You must commit to attend all of these mandatory rehearsals to participate in the play (no conflicts accepted).

Performances will take place on Friday, May 27th at 7:00pm and Saturday, May 28th at 2:00 pm at Newport High School.

Tuition of $75.00 is due at registration or by April 12th for checks/financial aid.  The fees collected help cover the expense of the production.  Ticket sales and concessions are also a source of revenue to help subsidize the cost of the production.  Financial aid is available through our PTA. Forms are online or in the office. If you plan to apply for financial aid, choose “Pay by Check” at registration and notify the Deposits Treasurer at [email protected]; any co-pay will still be due April 11th by 4:00pm, and we suggest enclosing it with your aid application.

Parent Volunteers are needed to actively assist with the project.  Committees will be organized for the following categories:  Costumes, Props, Publicity/Ticket Sales, Concessions, Backstage Parents, Cast Party and more!  Be prepared to join one of the committees AND to chaperone 2 or more rehearsals.  We need help from every actor’s family!
