Tambores del Sol - 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders  - Come Drum with Us!

(P.S.  This is not the same as Bomba del Sol!)

 

Join us for Tambores del Sol! Your child will learn a variety of rhythmic patterns and language styles associated with the hand drum (El Tambor). In addition, we will present drums from different regions of the world such as bata drums from Africa or Garawoun drums from the Garifunas in Central, South America and the Caribbean as an added bonus to expand their appreciation of culture and diversity. We are planning to provide a unique experience with invited artists to participate this season. We look forward to having your child in our program!

The classes are taught by Maestro Ricardo Guity, an experienced musician, educator, and member of our school community. We all know and adore him! The kids have a lot of fun and this is a great way for students to receive additional S.O.S/E.F.E.!! One or more parents of students participating in the class will also be present to help with attendance.

This is a PTA-sponsored program and is taught in Spanish.

Who May Participate?

Tambores is open to all Puesta 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, with a maximum of 17 students per session.  If the minimum enrollment of 5 students is not met, the class may be canceled.

Exceptions may apply for younger students if they have experience with Tambores. Please contact us at [email protected] to determine how they will do with the older kids and large equipment (K and 1st grade will need their actual parent/guardian to be present with them at class for liability reasons).

Both Beginners and Intermediate will be taught together. Each student should plan on committing to all three sessions so that she/he can perform with the Tambores ensemble at school events in Spring 2018.

How Can I Volunteer?

At least one PTA-member Parent must always be present to take attendance and help supervise. Parent Volunteer receives a 50% discounted registration fee for his/her child.  Please register for the Parent Volunteer discount upon checkout. Only one discounted volunteer registration is available. 

 

Time and Location:  New Day & Location Mondays, 3:35-4:45pm in the Band Portable (P-2).

Please have your child meet the instructor and chaperone at the school Gym right after school ends. Please supply your child with an after school nut-free snack (the gym has a drinking fountain).

 

Special Equipment:

Participants MUST have their own drum - a hand drum (El Tambor).  The tambor/conga will be an average of 28” tall and could be either 10” or 11” around (no specific wood color – your choice).  The tambors will be self standing and the students will sit on chairs while playing their tambors.”

All students must bring their drums to school on the day of class. The PTA room is the place to store them during the day. Simply bring them in the AM, enter the PTA room through the gym and store them on the far end of the room, all the way to the right—away from art supplies and gym stuff. The kids retrieve them later with the help of parents and teacher.
 
Do you have more than 1 child taking tambores?
One drum will be enough to practice at home and bring to school. We can supply the extra one. Or, consider purchasing a set/pair of congas at a special combined price.

Maestro Guity has one drum available to rent if you prefer not to purchase a drum. The rental fee will be $20/session and first-to-reply basis.

We recognize that families have different abilities to pay and have developed this voluntary 4-tier fee structure to better meet everyone’s needs. Simply select the rate appropriate for your family’s budget. This is completely confidential and does not impact your child’s program experience in any way.

  • Tier 4 reflects the full cost of sending a student to the program selected. If you are able to pay this amount, please do. Thank you.
  • Tier 3 is 33% subsidized rate to help families who can't afford the full cost of the program. Choose this rate if your family needs a partial subsidy.
  • Tier 2 is a 66% subsidy for families who need assistance to send a child to the program. Choose this rate if your family needs it.
  • Tier 1 is a full subsidy for families with children who would not attend the program otherwise. Choose this rate if your family needs it, and please also submit the PTA Financial Aid form.

 Financial aid may be available for families with financial needs. If you would like to apply for financial aid, please fill out the Financial Aid Form and submit it to the Principal for approval. The Principal will pass the form on to the Deposits treasurer. All requests are kept confidential. 

The last day to apply for financial aid for Session 4 is Friday, May 18.

A check fee of $5 per order the will be automatically added to your online order when you opt to "pay by check."  Financial aid co-pays will not be assessed the $5 fee.
